These subjective evaluations can be of life in general or of various components of life such as social life, financial situation, or work (Andrews & Withey, 1976; Campbell, Converse, & Rodgers, 1976). " For example, we infer that persons in a wheelchair, with certain diseases, with low income, or limitations in physical functioning have a poor overall quality of life. Such inferences are risky, however, when one considers the countless individuals who have difficult "objective" situations but who consider their lives to be meaningful, satisfying, and enjoyable.

Carroll Estes and Elizabeth Close emphasize the importance of understanding the linkages between social factors and health across the entire life course. Their chapter highlights four societal forces that have shaped public policy and long-term care-, the aging of the American population, the biomedicalization of aging, unresolved problems concerning health care access and costs, and the cummulation of dependency in old age. Estes and Close identify specific research that is needed to assist in the design of long-term care policy.

An understanding of the many determinants of quality of life can serve many purposes. One is to identify the most important contributors to quality of life so that they can be targeted for programs and interventions. Another is to provide a descriptive context for understanding how to appropriately measure quality of life within a particular study. For example, knowing the range and level of education, literacy, medical problems, and living situation in a particular study sample can aid selection of an appropriate conceptual and measurement approach, for example whether the focus should be on lowerversus higher-levels of functioning, or what methods of data collection are optimal.
